I finally made the Cargo Duffle (it's a FREE pattern designed by Anna Graham)! After seeing Carolyn Friedlanders Clammy Cargo in person I knew I wanted to make a patchwork version.
I didn't put cargo pockets on the duffle and I felt the bag needed something extra to make it POP! I made the decision to add the piping and I'm extremely pleased with how it turned out. The piping caused the assembly to be more challenging (because of the added bulk) but I really love the detail it provided. In the end I only broke 1 needle - I'd say that's pretty fantastic!
Metal zipper!
The inside of this bag is finished with a binding method. I used an interfacing from Joann's similar to Soft and Stable which caused my seams to be quite bulky. I say it was worth it because I love the puffiness that the interfacing helped create.
To make the patchwork panels I used THIS technique and then "quilt-as-you-go" during assembly. I enjoyed the fast / accurate patchwork technique and will use it again for pillows, bags and other scrap busting projects.
The finished size for my Patchwork Cargo Duffle is approximately
= 18 x 10.5 x 5.5
= 18 x 10.5 x 5.5
fabric : grey dot is canvas from Hobby Lobby,
lining is Tiger Lily by Heather Ross
patchwork squares are from personal stash
